STRATEGIC PSYCHOTHERAPY: What is Strategic Psychotherapy and Hypnosis

Strategic Psychotherapy emphasizes the idea that problems often arise from dysfunctional patterns. As a strategic therapist we perceive limitations in individuals as a process, rather than being solely rooted in an individual’s trauma, past or childhood. It is an accumulation of patterns, cognitive distortions and attributions which have created these processes all individuals run, some just do them more effectively than others. The individuals who do not have the skill set to filter thoughts, feelings, emotions, or overcome trauma well aren't able to bridge the gap between what is a useful thought or feeling and what isn't. By allowing myself to be your therapist and strategically intervene by using a framework we call strategic questioning you can build the skills to becoming more effective. Strategic Questioning is a type of questioning which focuses on how or what rather then why you are running this process. Why is this so pivotal? BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT THEY ARE RUNNING OR HOW THEY DO IT! ITS JUST SOMETHING THEY DO! When you say that out loud does it sound like something valid enough to keep doing? Definitely not but not many people have had the chance to identify these aspects of themselves. These questions get to the root cause of how rather then why. What does this do? it gives back the control, choice and power to you rather then the story of why. This helps establish more effective ways of interacting with yourself, your thoughts, and emotions. As a therapist you can expect to be prescribed specific tasks or directives such as a recorded hypnosis track to create positive changes, often with a focus on the here and now.

Hypnosis is a therapeutic technique that involves guiding my clients into a relaxed and focused state of consciousness, often called a trance, to promote positive changes in thoughts, behaviours, and or emotions. Through this trance like process the individual always remains in control. I like to use a ship and navigator metaphor to explain this to my clients, you are the ship, and I am the map directing you where you choose to go at no time can the map take over the captain. Hypnosis is not a magical or mystical process, but rather a psychological tool that works by leveraging suggestibility and the power of focused attention in order to create change. Throughout the hypnotic process you can expect to hear similar things which we spoke about in our session, you can also expect suggested skill sets or what we like to call tools to bring on board to the here and now. These suggestions can be expressed directly or in a metaphorical manner where you as the client can apply it as you wish. These hypnotic sessions are recorded and tasked as homework either alone or with another task to continue to re-embed the target of that session. You will notice how each following session will build on top of the last. In most cases 6 sessions is sufficient to target nearly all processes if you commit to listening to the recording daily and maintain consistent sessions which are most effective at a weekly schedule.
